Geoffrey von Monmouth (lat. Garfredus) (* um 1100 in Monmouth, † ca. 1154 in Cardiff) war ein englischer Pfarrer und Gelehrter, der zu einem der ersten Historiker Britanniens wurde.

Überblick

Geoffrey war der Verfasser der Historia Regum Britanniae (um 1135), die nach antikem Vorbild das Leben der britischen Könige beschreibt. Die Historia beginnt mit Brutus dem Trojaner, der als legendärer Ahnherren aller Briten festgeschrieben wird und reicht bis Cadwallon, dem König von Nordwales, der von ca. 625-634 regierte. Auch die Artus-Sage wird hier erstmals in ihrer ausgeschmückten Form vorstellt.

Durch seine Historia erhält Geoffrey dann die Gunst des Earl von Gloucester, der ihn um 1140 zum Erzdiakon von Llandaff und 1152 zum Bischof von Asaph ernennt. Um 1150 schrieb Geoffrey die Vita Merlini, die die Aruts-Sage weiter ausschmückt.
